  Phenology Notes
Phenology is a record keeping process that documents the daily happenings or natural history of mammal, avian, insect, and plant species throughout the nesting season. Over time, these notes help park naturalists to better understand the dynamics of the park’s flora and fauna.
Audubon Center of the North Woods'
  The Great Gray Owl Invasion
In the fall and winter of 2004-2005, Great Gray Owls, Northern Hawk Owls, and Boreal Owls, were recorded moving into Minnesota in unprecedented numbers. Local news, Twin Cities' media and even the National Geographic picked up on this extraordinary event. The reason for this invasion is most likely the lack of prey species, either because of a crash in the populations of red-backed voles — their primary food source; or the presence of a thick hard layer of ice due to intermittent snow melt caused by the effects of global warming. This layer of ice provides cover for their prey. Mike Link, the director of ACNW, has kept a photographic record of Great Gray Owls he encountered. .

6-19-05 Same as 6-18-05 plus Saw an adult red-shouldered hawk on the driveway! I startled it (it was on the ground) and it flew from the right side across the road into a tree. Great look, unmistakable – bird was a bit scruffy – molting? Also saw a broad-winged hawk sitting in a tree, cardinals were chipping at it. Then it flew to the top of a dead snag, where there was a fuzzy dead animal of some sort, probably a grey squirrel. It started eating it. We saw a second hawk fly away, and speculated that it could have been the mate sharing its kill. After the hawk finished its meal, it cleaned its beak on the wood and flew away.
