Audubon Center of the North Woods' Education Raptor Program

All of the centers raptors come from the Gappert Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul. They all have permanent injuries that deem them non-releasable. Each of the raptors now live permanently at the center acting as ambassadors for their species. Listed below are all of the center = s current residents, their life history and some natural history about each individual species. (click on the species name for more info on that species)

Freya” the American Kestrel

Family: Falconidae
Species: Falco sparverius
Age: Hatched 1997
Sex: Female
Weight: 4.5 oz
Found: Buffalo, Minnesota in July 1997
Injury: Head and right eye (possible car accident)
History: Freya lost her vision in the right eye and was deemed non-releasable. She came to the center in August of 1997 to be used as an education bird.

“Dakota & Cinnamon” the Red-tailed Hawks

Name: Dakota
Family: Accipitridae
Species: Buteo jamaicensis
Age: Hatched in 1991
Weight: 3 pounds
Found: North Dakota in October1991
Injury: fractured left humerus (broken left wing)
History: Injured by a shotgun during her first fall. Dakota was kept for rehabilitation until it was determined that she would not recover 100%. It was in May of 1993 when she was brought to the center to be an educational bird.

Name: Cinnamon
Family: Accipitridae
Species: Buteo jamaicensis
Age: Hatched in 1979
Weight: 3lbs.
Found: In Minnesota, October 1979
Injury: broken left wing (close to the elbow)
History: Cinnamon was hatched in the spring of 1979. She was shot in the left wing during her first fall. By the time she was found, Cinnamon was half starved. She was taken to the Raptor Center (TRC) and treated. She was deemed non- releasable and spent her first few years at the MN zoo bird show. After the zoo, Cinnamon went back to TRC, then to a private educator who kept her for 20 years. In the fall of 2000, Cinnamon made her final home the Audubon Center.

Christine Willcox

“Woody” the Bald Eagle

Family: Accipitridae
Species: Haliaeetus leucocephalus
Sex: Male
Weight: 81/2 pounds
Found: near Bemidji, Minnesota in July1993
Injury: fracture of left humerus near elbow, left elbow luxation
History: Woody's nest was blown down out of a tree. He was probably on the ground several days before being found along with his female sibling. The female fully recovered from her injuries and was returned near where she was found in Bemidji. However, Woody's wing was badly damaged and could not be repaired.
